RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Loras College track and field athletes
Liz Ulferts (Anamosa, Iowa/Anamosa) and Kyle
Calvert (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) have been named Central
Region Field Athletes of the Year for the 2008 Division III
indoor season by the United States Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Ulferts,
a sophomore, took the national Division III in the weight throw
with her winning mark of 58-1¼ at the Iowa Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference Championships.
Calvert, a junior, cleared a career-best 17-0 ¾ in the
pole vault at the Karl Schlender Last Chance Meet hosted by
UW-Whitewater March 7, lifting him to third on the yearly list
entering the NCAA Indoor Championships. He earlier vaulted 16-11
to finish first at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
meet.
Also
honored from the Central Region were sprinter Chris
Wolf (Central Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year)
and hurdler Holly Andrews (Central Region Women's
Track Athlete of the Year), both from Nebraska Wesleyan University.
Steve Mathre (men) and Joe Sweeney
(women), both of St. Thomas (Minn.), were honored as Central
Region Coaches of the Year.
