CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Simpson
College senior forward Katelyn Whiton (Panora,
Iowa, Perry) and Loras College senior forward Kyle White
(Antioch, Ill./Antioch) were named second team All-American
by D3hoops.com Mar. 22. Whiton is the second Storm player to
be named to one of the D3hoops.com All-America teams, joining
Emily Tonn (4th Team, 2000), while White is the first Duhawk
to be recognized by the online publication.
This is the second All-America team that Whiton and White have
been named to this season. Each was selected to the 2008 NCAA
Division III State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball
Team by their respective coaches' associations. White was named
to the Second Team by the National Association of Basketball
Coaches (NABC). The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)
selects only one 10-player team each year.
Whiton,
the first Simpson athlete to be named WBCA All-American since
Laurie Sankey earned the honor in 1984, led the Storm to their
second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance as Simpson posted a 27-3
record this past season. Whiton was named Iowa Conference MVP,
selected as 1-of-10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy, and was
named D3hoops.com West Region Player of the Year. Whiton led
the Storm in scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.3). She shot
a team high 53.9 percent from the floor.
White,
a two-time Iowa Conference MVP and an NABC third team selection
a year ago, led Loras to the second round of the NCAA Division
III Tournament and a 22-7 record. The NCAA First Round win over
No. 2 UW-Whitewater was the Duhawks' first since rejoining the
NCAA over 20 seasons ago.
White
led a balanced Loras attack in scoring and rebounding with 17.5
points and 7.6 rebounds per game in 29 contests, leading Loras
in scoring 15 times and rebounding 17 times. He ranked second
in the Conference in scoring and rebounding, and third in field
goal percentage (55.1 percent, 189-of-343). In 16 Conference
games, White recorded six double-doubles, most in the IIAC.
He averaged 17.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and shot 55.7
percent from the field, ranking first, second, and third in
the IIAC, respectively. He ranked fourth in the league with
34 offensive rebounds.
