IOWA . . .For
the third consecutive year, Wartburg College swept the team
titles at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC)
Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Wartburg College
Friday and Saturday. The title is the ninth straight and 12th
overall for the Knight women, and the sixth overall for the
men.
The
Wartburg women scored 279.25 points, eclipsing their own meet
record of 267 points set last year. Central College finished
second, 154.25 points behind with a total of 125 points followed
by Luther College (114.25 points) and Loras College (108). On
the men’s side, Wartburg totaled 186 points, 49.5 points
better than runner-up Central (136.5). Loras finished third
with 114 points while Buena Vista took fourth with 105 points.

Most
Valuable Performers: Central senior Kari Hutchinson
and Buena Vista junior Eric Bertelsen were
named Conference Most Valuable Performers. Hutchinson, who won
the IIAC heptathlon last weekend, played a part in six point
scoring performances for the Dutch. In addition to her NCAA
provisional qualifying point total of 4,310 in the heptathlon,
she ran the anchor leg of Central’s 4x400-meter relay,
which won with an NCAA-provisional-qualifying time of 3:55.57.
She also placed third in both the 200 (25.42) and 400 (57.47),
fourth in the high jump (1.5 meters; 4-11) and sixth in the
long jump (5.14 meters; 16-10 ½), posting an NCAA provisional
time in the 400.
Bertelsen
was a part of three winning and two runner-up performances at
the Championships for the Beavers. He won the long jump (7.21m;
23-8) and the 200 (21.67) and ran the second leg on BVU’s
winning 4x100 relay (41.55), all of which posted NCAA provisional
qualifying marks. Bertelsen also took second in the 100 (11.01)
and ran the second leg on the Beavers’ runner-up 4x400
relay team (3:20.27).

Qualifying Performances: Two NCAA automatic qualifying
marks and 62 provisional qualifying marks were met during the
Conference Championships (prelims and finals combined). The
automatic qualifying marks were:

meters)
Coaches
of the Year: For the third straight year, and the fourth
time since 2002, Wartburg head coach Marcus Newsom
was named IIAC men’s and women’s Coach of the Year
during the same year. It marks the ninth straight year Newsom
has been selected women’s Coach of the Year and the fifth
time he has been named men’s Coach of the Year.

of the top-three finishing relay teams, are recognized as All-Conference.
Iowa
Conference schools will participate in a variety of Last Chance
meets over the next week. The 2008 NCAA Division III Outdoor
Track and Field National Championships are May 22-24, at the
University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh.
