MOUNT VERNON , IOWA . . . Michael Joyce has been named head women’s soccer coach at Cornell College.

Joyce was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cornell and the head boys’ soccer coach at Clear Creek-Amana High School last season. He takes over the Cornell women’s program, coached by Mike and Steve Robertson for the past 12 seasons.

Joyce was the assistant men’s soccer coach at NCAA Division II San Francisco State University for four years (2002-2006). In the 2005 season, San Francisco State ranked 13th in the country for most improved teams and matched the program’s highest win total over the previous 25 years. The 2003 squad earned Academic All-America Team honors.

“We are lucky to add somebody with Michael’s knowledge of the sport and his playing and coaching experience at San Francisco State,” said Dick Simmons, interim director of athletics at Cornell. “He is young and energetic and will be a good fit for our program.”

Joyce earned a bachelor’s degree in English, with a concentration in creative writing at San Francisco State in 2002. He started two years at center midfield on the Gators soccer team. Joyce was named team captain and most valuable player and was selected to the All-Conference and All-Far West Region teams. He also played for the North California State U17 and U23 Olympic Development teams.

Joyce is a 1994 graduate of Saint Francis (Calif.) High School, where he helped his soccer team win the Central Coast championship in 1993. He was team captain and most valuable player and also named league Offensive Player of the Year.

Joyce was head freshman/junior varsity boys’ soccer coach at Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) High School from 1998-2000. He helped coach the De Anza Sharks girls’ youth club team for seven years. Joyce’s club teams reached the Northern California State finals seven years and won four state titles. Sixteen of the players on those teams went on to play soccer at the NCAA Division I level.

Joyce holds a national “B” coaching license with the United States Soccer Federation. He is expected to complete his master’s degree in sport management at the University of San Francisco this fall. Joyce and his wife, Samantha, reside in Iowa City.
