MOUNT
VERNON , IOWA . . . Michael Joyce has been named head
women’s soccer coach at Cornell College.
Joyce
was the assistant men’s soccer coach at Cornell and the
head boys’ soccer coach at Clear Creek-Amana High School
last season. He takes over the Cornell women’s program,
coached by Mike and Steve Robertson
for the past 12 seasons.
Joyce was the assistant men’s soccer coach
at NCAA Division II San Francisco State University for four
years (2002-2006). In the 2005 season, San Francisco State ranked
13th in the country for most improved teams and matched the
program’s highest win total over the previous 25 years.
The 2003 squad earned Academic All-America Team honors.
“We
are lucky to add somebody with Michael’s knowledge of
the sport and his playing and coaching experience at San Francisco
State,” said Dick Simmons, interim director
of athletics at Cornell. “He is young and energetic and
will be a good fit for our program.”
Joyce earned a bachelor’s degree in English,
with a concentration in creative writing at San Francisco State
in 2002. He started two years at center midfield on the Gators
soccer team. Joyce was named team captain and most valuable
player and was selected to the All-Conference and All-Far West
Region teams. He also played for the North California State
U17 and U23 Olympic Development teams.
Joyce is a 1994 graduate of Saint Francis (Calif.)
High School, where he helped his soccer team win the Central
Coast championship in 1993. He was team captain and most valuable
player and also named league Offensive Player of the Year.
Joyce was head freshman/junior varsity boys’
soccer coach at Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) High School from 1998-2000.
He helped coach the De Anza Sharks girls’ youth club team
for seven years. Joyce’s club teams reached the Northern
California State finals seven years and won four state titles.
Sixteen of the players on those teams went on to play soccer
at the NCAA Division I level.
Joyce holds a national “B” coaching
license with the United States Soccer Federation. He is expected
to complete his master’s degree in sport management at
the University of San Francisco this fall. Joyce and his wife,
Samantha, reside in Iowa City.
