MOUNT VERNON , IOWA . . . Cornell College has named Dick Simmons interim director of athletics for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Simmons begins his 17th season as head athletic trainer at Cornell. He has also served the past eight years as assistant director of athletics.

Simmons takes over for Tina Hill, who is on leave after five years as Cornell’s director of athletics.

“Dick has been a valuable member of Cornell’s athletics staff since 1991,” said John Harp, vice president for student affairs at Cornell. “His extensive knowledge of our athletic program operations, his leadership abilities and his organizational skills will serve Cornell well in this capacity. Dick will be a very valuable asset to us this year.”

“This is an exciting situation for me after being here 16 years,” said Simmons. “I’m excited about the direction our athletics are going and want to continue the positive things that are happening here. I will do what I can to help our staff be successful and see them succeed.”

Simmons is a 1983 graduate of BGM High School and a 1990 graduate of William Penn College, with a double major in physical education and health and a minor in psychology. Simmons spent one season as head athletic trainer at William Penn before coming to Cornell in fall 1991.

Simmons is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association board of certification. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Iowa Athletic Trainers’ Society.
