MOUNT
VERNON , IOWA . . . Cornell
College has named Dick Simmons interim director
of athletics for the 2007-2008 academic year.
Simmons
begins his 17th season as head athletic trainer at Cornell.
He has also served the past eight years as assistant director
of athletics.
Simmons
takes over for Tina Hill, who is on leave after
five years as Cornell’s director of athletics.
“Dick
has been a valuable member of Cornell’s athletics staff
since 1991,” said John Harp, vice president
for student affairs at Cornell. “His extensive knowledge
of our athletic program operations, his leadership abilities
and his organizational skills will serve Cornell well in this
capacity. Dick will be a very valuable asset to us this year.”
“This
is an exciting situation for me after being here 16 years,”
said Simmons. “I’m excited about the direction our
athletics are going and want to continue the positive things
that are happening here. I will do what I can to help our staff
be successful and see them succeed.”
Simmons
is a 1983 graduate of BGM High School and a 1990 graduate of
William Penn College, with a double major in physical education
and health and a minor in psychology. Simmons spent one season
as head athletic trainer at William Penn before coming to Cornell
in fall 1991.
Simmons
is certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
board of certification. He is a member of the National Athletic
Trainers’ Association and the Iowa Athletic Trainers’
Society.
