WOMEN'S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP - DAY TWO RECAP

September 29, 2007

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA . . . Wartburg College posted its second round of 318 in as many days at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls to take a 16-stroke lead over Loras College into the final weekend of play at the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Women's Golf Championship. Wartburg's Stephanie Burns shot a 78 to finish the first weekend at 9-over-par 153. She leads the medalist chase by three strokes over teammate Daina Deery.

Wartburg posted the back-to-back 318s in significantly different weather conditions. Friday's opening round was played in sunny conditions with temperatures in the 80s, while players were forced to adjust to blustery winds and overcast skies for Saturday's round. The Knights sit at 636 heading into next weekend's final two rounds. Loras is at 652, while defending Conference champion Simpson College is third overall at 673 after shooting a second-round 336. Luther College, which entered the day in third place, slipped to fourth after firing a 344 Saturday for a 677 36-hole total.

Wartburg and Loras each posted two rounds in the 70s. The Knights were led by a 76 from Deery and Burns' 78, while the Duhawks received 79s from Brittney Davis and Brooke Davis. The only other golfer to post a sub-80 score Saturday was Simpson's Megan Smith (79).

Individually after 36-holes, Burns (75-78-153) holds a three-stroke lead over Deery (80-76-156) and a seven-stroke lead over Wartburg's Kate Thompson (78-82-160) and Brittney Davis (81-79-160). Smith (83-79-162) rounds out the top five individuals.

The 72-hole Championship continues next weekend, October 5-6, at The Meadows Golf Club in Asbury. Tee times on Friday begin at 10:00 a.m. with players from Buena Vista, Cornell and Dubuque teeing off first. Central, Coe and Luther players will play together during the middle set of tee times, and Wartburg, Simpson and Loras will play together. Saturday’s tee times start at 9:00 a.m. with pairings determined by individual score after 54-holes.
