RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) announced today that Wartburg College junior
forward Rachel Oswald (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert)
has been named the 2007 IIAC Women’s Soccer Most Valuable
Player and Cornell head coach Michael Joyce
has been named the 2007 IIAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the
Year.
Oswald led
Wartburg to a runner-up Conference finish in the regular season,
the school’s first Iowa Conference Tournament title and
a berth in the 60-team 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s
Soccer Championship field. She ranks second in the IIAC in scoring
with 31 points on five assists and a league-high 13 goals. Oswald
also has five game-winning goals, including the lone goal in
Wartburg’s 1-0 win over Loras in the Iowa Conference Tournament
final. The Knights enter their first NCAA Tournament with a
16-3-1 record, tying the school record for victories in a season,
and are a perfect 11-0-0 when Oswald scores a point. Oswald
is the first Wartburg women’s soccer player to earn Iowa
Conference MVP honors.
In eight
Conference matches, she ranked second in the IIAC with five
goals and 13 points and tied for fourth with three assists.
She also ranked second with two game-winning goals and registered
at least one point in five of eight matches.
Joyce,
in just his first season as Cornell coach, led the Rams to a
third-place IIAC finish and their best Conference record (5-3-0)
since 2002 (6-2-1). Cornell finished 7-8-1 overall and advanced
to the Iowa Conference Tournament for the third consecutive
season.
The
IIAC also announced today the 2007 Women’s Soccer All-Conference
Team. The 28-member Team includes 13 repeat All-Conference performers
including Loras’ Lauren Schaeflein who
became the 16th four-time All-Conference selection. Regular
season Iowa Conference champion Loras led all schools with seven
All-Conference selections followed by IIAC Tournament champ
Wartburg with six, including five on the First Team. Luther
College and Cornell College were next with four selections,
while Central College had three players honored.
