DECORAH,
IOWA . . . The Luther College women's basketball team
will join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)
in the fight against breast cancer with a WBCA Pink Zone event
at Luther Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. when the Norse will host
Simpson College.
Fans
are invited to wear pink to the game, pink ribbons will be handed
out at the door, and Pink Zone t-shirts will be sold at the
game with proceeds going toward Breast Cancer Research. There
will be a short program honoring those affected by breast cancer
at half-time. This is the third year Luther has worked with
the WBCA Pink Zone.
The
WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the
WBCA coaches and their teams to assist in raising breast cancer
awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and
beyond.
The
WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as "Think Pink", began
in 2007 with more than 120 schools working to make the inaugural
year a success. In 2008, over 1,100 teams and organizations
participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000
for breast cancer awareness and research.
The
NCAA has also joined the WBCA Pink Zone initiative and was able
to raise $25,000 by implementing the "Calling for a Cure"
campaign where all NCAA women's basketball officials blew a
pink whistle Feb. 8-17, 2008.
In
addition to Luther, seven other Iowa Conference institutions
will host similar events throughout the month of February.
