CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Five Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) men's golfers have been named 2009 Cleveland
Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars for the NCAA III. The 42-member
team was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of American
(GCAA) at the Division III Men’s National Golf Tournament
held May 13-16 at the PGA Golf Club, Port St. Lucie, Florida
and hosted by Methodist University.
Central
College’s Andy Petersen and Andrew
Townsend were recognized, as were Luther College's
Ross Jacobucci, Tom Lantzy
and Paul Soener.
Petersen, a two-time Iowa Conference MVP, is a physics major
with a 3.29 grade point average. Townsend, also an academic
all-Iowa Conference honoree, carries a 3.51 GPA with an accounting
major. Lantzy and Soener, both two-time all-conference performers,
became the fifth and sixth golfers in Luther history to be named
a Scholar All-America twice during their careers.
Central’s men’s golfers have received All-America
Scholars recognition 36 times since 1984, the most of any Iowa
school. This is the first season that Luther head coach Scott
Fjelstul, an eight-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, has
had three golfers receive this distinguished honor in a single
year. During his 22-year career he has coached 12 golfers who
have earned 18 Scholar All-America Honors.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar
status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically
and competed in at least two full years at the collegiate level,
participated in 70-percent of his teams competitive rounds or
compete in the NCAA championship, have a stroke average of 79.0
or lower in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point
average of 3.2 or higher.
