WARTBURG'S MARTIJN NAMED
NCBWA CENTRAL REGION PITCHER OF THE YEAR

KENOSHA, WIS. . . . Webster University outfielder Andy Fuiten (Sr., Decatur, Ill.) was named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Central Region “Hitter of the Year” on May 19, while Wartburg College’s Jerrold Martijn (Sr., Orangestad, Aruba) was named NCBWA Central Region “Pitcher of the Year.”

Fuiten was named first-team All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and SLIAC “Player of the Year” with a .407 batting average, 53 runs scored, 11 doubles, 15 home runs, 58 RBI, nine stolen bases, an .822 slugging percentage and a .532 on-base percentage. He received three-of-six first-place votes. Carthage College catcher Mike Hughes (Sr. Round Lake, Ill.) was second in the voting, followed by Loras College shortstop Nick Olberding (Sr., Dyersville, Iowa/Beckman) third, Wheaton College (Ill.) shortstop Brian Kolb (Jr., Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) fourth, Elmhurst College third baseman Zach Hofer (So., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) fifth and Aurora University outfielder Tony Wellner (Jr., Minooka, Ill.) ranked sixth.

Martijn was named first-team All-Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and IIAC “Pitcher of the Year” with a 10-1 regular-season record, a 3.51 earned run average, 9.33 strikeouts per nine innings, 4.06 walks per nine innings and a .233 opponent-batting average. Martijn received three-of-six first-place votes and two second-place votes. Carthage’s Trace Ruffie (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights Hersey) was second, followed by Alex Kollack (Jr., Dupo, Ill.) from Maryville University third, Aurora’s Chris Koudelka (Sr., Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) fourth and North Park University’s Mike Giovenco (Sr., River Grove, Ill,) ranked fifth.
