CEDAR
RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Two Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (IIAC) wrestlers and one IIAC women's golfer have
been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
VII College Division At-Large Teams selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced
Thursday.
The
at-large team consists of men’s fencing, golf, gymnastics,
ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, water
polo and wrestling.
Wrestlers
Alec Bonander (Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon) of
Luther and Aaron Wernimont (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas
Area) of Wartburg were named to the First Team, as was Wartburg
women's golfer Kate Thompson (Webster City,
Iowa/Webster City).
Bonander
is a senior management major with a 3.82 grade point average.
He completed his senior year with a record of 18-4 increasing
his career total to 97-25 and was a two-time All-American. He
also made his fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III
Wrestling Championships.
Wernimont
is a senior biology major with a 3.55 GPA. He completed his
senior year with a perfect 44-0 record and a second consecutive
NCAA championship at 157 pounds. Wernimont was also a three-time
All-American and a three-time Iowa Conference Champion.
Thompson
is a senior biochemistry major with a 3.74 grade point average.
A three-time All-Iowa Conference and two-time all-region player,
she led the Knights to their fourth national tournament appearance
in five seasons.
Academic
All-District First Team members move on to the national CoSIDA/ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-America® ballot. The ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-America® Men's At-Large Team
is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, June 9 and the Women's
At-Large Team is scheduled to be announced on Thursday, June
11.
To
be eligible for selection to the Academic All-District Team,
a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic
standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a
3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
District
VII College Division includes NCAA Division II, NCAA Division
III and NAIA schools in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana,
Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
