191 STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN ALL-ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

May 27, 2009

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that one hundred ninety-one student-athletes competing in the Conference’s six spring sports met the requirements for recognition on the 2008-09 Iowa Conference All-Academic Team.

To be eligible for IIAC All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must compete at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and attain a 3.5 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

Luther College has a Conference-high 43 student-athletes added to the Team followed by Simpson College (33 student-athletes), Wartburg College (33 student-athletes), and Central College (21 student-athletes). Of the 190 recognized, 53 were sophomores, 72 were juniors, and 66 were seniors.

One hundred seventeen of the student-athletes honored participated in track and field, including 74 women and 43 men. Thirty-two baseball players, 26 softball players, nine men’s golfers and seven men’s tennis players round out the Spring 2009 additions to the Team.

Sixty-three (33.2 percent) of the 2009 Spring All-Academic Team earned IIAC All-Academic honors in the fall or winter season. Eighteen of Luther’s 43, ten of Cornell’s 16, nine of Wartburg’s 33, and seven of Simpson’s 33 Spring All-Academic selections earned similar honors in the fall or winter.
