WAVERLY,
IOWA . . . Wartburg College senior women’s golfer
Kate Thompson of Webster City was one of 29
women from NCAA Divisions I, II and III to be selected for a
prestigious post-graduate scholarship. The spring student-athlete
group was released Tuesday, June 23.
The
NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87
for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes
who excel academically and athletically and who are in their
final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
Thompson,
who also earned academic All-American accolades from the Collegiate
Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine
earlier this month, was a key contributor to Wartburg’s
fourth Iowa Conference team championship and NCAA national tournament
berth in the last five seasons. She ended her collegiate playing
career as a three-time all-conference and two-time National
Golf Coaches Association all-region selection and gained Duramed
Futures Tour/NGCA All-American honors in 2008. Thompson is enrolled
in the University of Des Moines’ School of Osteopathic
Medicine next fall where she will take part in the Rural Medicine
Education Pathway which prepares students for a primary care
practice in a rural community.
The
award continues an impressive stretch for the college, as Wartburg
has had at least one NCAA post-graduate scholar in each of the
last six years. The institution’s all-time total is 29
with 22 of those being presented since 1991.
