SIX NAMED TO NSCAA/adidas®
ALL-WEST REGION TEAMS

December 12, 2008

CEDAR RAPIDS , IOWA . . . Six Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men’s soccer players were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas® All-Far West Region Team announced Wednesday, December 10.

Iowa Conference champion and national semifinalist Loras College earned three All-Region selections followed by Wartburg College with two. Central College picked the remaning All-Region pick.

Two of the three Duhawks selected were repeat selections to the First Team - junior midfielder Santiago Mejia (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar), and sophomore midfielder Miguel Bonilla (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Bolivar). The duo was joined on the 11-player First Team by Wartburg junior goalkeeper Trent Michael (Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale). Michael was a Third Team selection a year ago.

Wartburg placed sophomore defender Luke Prater (Springfield, Mo./Kickapoo) on the Second Team, while Loras junior defender Tyler Hoyt (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) and Central senior midfielder Cruz Herr (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) were named to the Third Team. Herr was a Second Team selection in 2007.

Bonilla, the 2008 Iowa Conference Men's Soccer MVP, started 26 games for the Duhawks, scoring 18 goals and registering six assists for a league-high 42 points. He also scored a league-high five game-winning goals. Bonilla was part of a Loras offense that scored 67 goals and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships for the second consecutive season. He also led the league in scoring, recording 18 points on seven goals and four assists in eight IIAC games.

Mejia, a 3-time First Team All-Iowa Conference selection, was Loras' second leading scorer with 27 points on five goals and a league-high 17 assists.

Michael, a First Team All-Conference selection, posted a 14-7-0 record in net with a 0.73 goals-against average, an .860 save percentage, and eight shutouts. He posted back-to-back shutouts in the Iowa Conference Tournament to lead the No. 3-seed Knights to the tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships.

Prater, a two-time All-Conference honoree and a First Team pick in 2008, registered one assist in 18 games, but helped lead a Knight defense that allowed just 16 goals in 22 games.

Herr, a 4-time All-IIAC selection and a 3-time First Teamer, played in 17 games with four points on a goal and two assists from the midfield.

Hoyt, a First Team All-Iowa Conference selection, scored eight points on three goals and two assists.
