CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . A trio of Iowa Conference basketball players have been named to the 2009-10 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men's and Women's Basketball Teams, as selected recently by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Senior center Chris Handke (Bellevue, Iowa/Bellevue) of Cornell was a First Team men's selection, senior guard Margo Muhlbauer (Manilla, Iowa/IKM) was a Second Team women's selection, and senior forward Andrew Dau (Primghar, Iowa/South O'Brien) of Simpson was tabbed for the men's Third Team.

Handke, who carries a 3.91 cumulative grade point average, is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. He is a three-time academic all-Iowa Conference selection and two-time first team academic all-district winner. A 41st round draft pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers last June, Handke plans to pursue a career in professional baseball this spring.

The 6-foot-11 Handke is a fourth-year letterwinner with 89 career starts with the Rams. He leads the IIAC in rebounds (9.8 rpg) and blocked shots (2.00) while averaging 13.4 points per game and shooting 51.1 percent from the field.

Handke has posted 11 double-doubles this season, and scored in double figures in 20 of 25 games. His 261 rebounds rank second on the school’s single-season list behind Gus Glasier (280, 1966-67).

Muhlbauer holds a 3.75 cumulative GPA is pursuing a bachelor's degree in accounting. She is a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic Team and a two-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII selection.

A 5-8 guard, Muhlbauer was a scoring threat from the minute she first donned a BVU uniform as a freshman. She led the IIAC in scoring in each of her four years, amassing 2,058 points — only the fourth Iowa Conference player to surpass 2,000 points and the second Buena Vista player to reach the mark behind Jeannie Demers (1983-87), Division III career scoring leader with 3,171 points. During the 2009-10 season, averaged a league-high 22.0 points per game, while ranking second on the team in rebounds (5.5 rpg), assists (2.0 apg), and steals (2.5 spg). Buena Vista ended its season at 17-10 overall, 10-6 in the Iowa Conference, advancing to the IIAC Tournament semifinals.

Dau carries a 3.97 cumulative GPA and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science and math. A three-time Iowa Conference All-Academic selection, Dau has been named to the President’s List (4.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale) at Simpson five semesters and the Dean’s List (3.7-3.99 on a 4.0) on two occasions.

A 6-4 forward, Dau entered his senior season averaging less than five points per game during his career. His numbers improved dramatically in his final season, finishing the year second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.4 rpg). Simpson ended its season with a record of 6-19 overall and 3-13 in the Iowa Conference.

To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
