WAVERLY, IOWA . . . With four players in the top-11, Central College captured its 28th Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's golf championship Saturday at Centennial Oaks Golf Course. The Dutch fired a final-round 312 in blustery conditions en route to a 72-hole team total of 1,221 and an 11-stroke victory over Luther College. Andy Soper of Buena Vista (74-73-75-76—298) fired a final-round 76 for a three-shot victory over Luther’s Ross Jacobucci and Central’s Andrew Townsend for meet medalist and IIAC Player of the Year honors. Soper is Buena Vista’s first meet medalist since Bill Naughton won the 1985 IIAC meet and the Beavers’ first league MVP since Naughton won back-to-back honors in 1985 and 1986.

Jacobucci (82-74-75-70—301) fired a final-round 70 Saturday to post the day’s low round, then defeated Townsend (79-75-71-76—301) on the third playoff hole for second place. Simpson’s James Montgomery (80-68-72-82), who entered the final round with the medalist lead, finished fourth after a final round 82. Central’s Justin Smool (71-80-79-79—309) placed fifth.

A five-way playoff was held to decide place six through 10 with Wartburg’s Michael Dominick (86-72-74-78—310) taking sixth. Central’s Brent Messmore (79-75-76-80—310) took seventh, while Wartburg’s Chris Bushbaum (78-75-74-83—310) topped teammate Jason Klein (86-72-74-78—310) for ninth place. Loras’ Mark Dolphin (80-71-75-84—310) claimed the final All-Conference position by placing tenth.

Buena Vista posted the low team score Saturday with a 308, one shot better than Luther’s 309. The Norse finished with a four-round total of 1,232, while the Beavers edged Wartburg for third with a 1,236 total. The Knights placed fourth with a 1,237 total.

With its 28th Iowa Conference men’s golf title, Central has earned an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship at the Hershey Links and Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Penn., beginning May 11. It will be the 29th NCAA appearance for the Dutch.

Coach of the Year: Wartburg coach Alan Johnson was named IIAC Coach of the Year. It is his first Coach of the Year honor. This spring, Johnson led the Knights to a runner-up finish at the 16-team Simpson Invitational, fourth-place finishes at the Conference meet and the Loras and Wartburg Spring Invitationals, and a sixth-place finish at the 22-team Buena Vista Invitational.
