Guy Mosher, CentralPELLA, IOWA . . . Central College’s Guy Mosher has been named the NCAA Division III assistant coach of the year for men’s track and field by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Mosher had previously been named the regional assistant of the year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Now an associate head coach, Mosher recently completed his 19th season at Central. He has coached athletes who have captured all-America honors more than 200 times in 12 events, including 15 national champions in seven events.

Central athletes continue to excel in his specialty, the multi-events. The Dutch had five national qualifiers in the decathlon/heptathlon at the NCAA Division III championships in Berea, Ohio May 27-29, with three earning all-America distinction. Kurtis Brondyke (junior, Clinton) was fifth in the decathlon and Ethan Miller (sophomore, Seymour) was eighth. Jill Ziskovsky (junior, Dallas Center, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) was fifth in the heptathlon, while Carissa Bentz (senior, Ute, Boyer Valley HS) was ninth and Caitlin Wilson (sophomore, Oakland, Riverside HS) was 17th.

Overall, Central had 10 athletes earn all-America distinction 12 times. The Dutch men tied for 17th place in the national team standings while the women tied for 49th.

Under Mosher’s direction, Central athletes have won six national decathlon/heptathlon crowns with five runners up while gaining all-America honors 28 times.

He also assists with the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay squads. Central placed sixth in the men’s 4x100 and eighth in the 4x400-meter relays at the national meet last week and also qualified for the NCAA meet in the women’s 4x400-meter relay.

Head coach Joe Dunham, Mosher and the rest of the Dutch staff guided Central to its second straight Iowa Conference men’s team championship May 7-8.

“He has such a huge knowledge base,” Brondyke said. “He really knows what he’s teaching. At the start he can dumb it down for us because the decathlon is such a broad spectrum of events. Then he gradually works you up to learn the more technical aspects of each event.

“You can tell he really cares. He puts so much time into it. He’s down at the track all day working with us individually. It’s that kind of individual attention that makes Central track what it is.

“He’s doing what he loves.”

Mosher served as coach for decathlete Kip Janvrin in the 2000 Olympics in Australia. In 1998 he was selected to serve as a coach for the U.S. national decathlon team at the U.S. vs. Germany Decathlon in Lubbock, Texas. In 1997 he was chosen to coach the U.S. junior decathlon squad in a meet against Canada.

“It’s great having him as part of our program,” Dunham said. “He does a nice job of getting our athletes ready to compete.”
