Howe, Wartburg College, Clinton, Iowa/Northeast Goose Lake Howe, a senior second baseman, hit .533 (8-for-15) with two home runs, a double, four RBI and five runs scored to lead #3-seed Wartburg to its second straight Iowa Conference Tournament title. In the Knights’ opener, a 10-0, 5-inning win over #6-seed Loras, Howe went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a double and three RBI. She went 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 2-1, 9-inning win over #2-seed Coe. In a 9-5 win over #4 Simpson, she was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and in the Championship game, a 6-0 win over top-seeded Luther, Howe went 2-for-4 and led the Knights to their second straight automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. |
Apr. 29 | Christina
Gaard, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa/Decorah Gaard, a senior outfielder, hit .583 (7-for-12) with a double, six RBI and three runs scored in four games as Luther clinched its first Conference title since 1988. Gaard went a combined 5-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of #22-ranked Central. In the opener, a 15-5 Norse win, she was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. In an 8-2 win in the nightcap, she went 2-for-3 with four RBI and one run scored. Gaard was 1-for-3 in Luther’s 4-1 loss to Wartburg but rebounded with a 1-for-2, 1 double, 1 RBI performance in a 4-3 win that clinched the Conference title outright. |
Apr. 22 | Sara
Blaser, Cornell College, Davenport, Iowa/North Blaser, a sophomore third baseman, returned to the line-up after missing a week to hit .611 (11-for-18) with four home runs, a double and 16 RBI. In Cornell’s 6-2 win over Dubuque, she had a pinch-hit grand slam in the third inning that included the game winning runs. She went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the nightcap, a 6-5 Cornell loss. Blaser went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in the Rams’ 4-2 win over Mount Mercy in the opener of a doubleheader, then had two hits in three at-bats with a double and an RBI in the a 3-2 loss to Mount Mercy. She hit her second grand slam of the week as part of a 3-for-4, 5-RBI performance in Cornell’s 14-8 win over Beloit before finishing the week with another 3-for-4 outing in a 5-2 win over Beloit. |

Schultz, Coe College, Clayton, Iowa/Clayton Ridge Schultz, a sophomore pitcher, started all eight games for Coe during the week, posting a 6-2 record with a 1.02 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 41.1 innings with four shutouts including a perfect game against the University of Dubuque. In the first game of the twin-bill with the Spartans, Schultz struck out 10 batters while facing the minimum of 21 in a 4-0 Kohawk victory. She followed that performance with a four scoreless innings in game two, striking out five and allowing three hits. Prior to the Dubuque doubleheader, Schultz handed Luther just its second loss of the season (2-0), throwing seven innings of two-hit, five-strikeout ball. She also recorded a pair of wins over Loras, pitching three innings in a 12-3 win and a complete game, three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts a 1-0 Coe win. Schultz recorded her sixth win of the week in a complete game, four-hit shutout over Wartburg (4-0), in which she struck out four and allowed four hits. He two defeats during the week were in second games of doubleheaders with Luther (8-3) and Wartburg (2-1). (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week) |

Anderson, Central College, Fairfield, Iowa/Fairfield Anderson, a senior left fielder, hit .778 (7-for-9) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, seven RBI and six runs scored in four games during the week. In the opener of a doubleheader with Buena Vista, a 12-1 five-inning Central win, Anderson went 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. She went 1-for-2 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap, a 14-3 five-inning win. In a pair of 10-0 wins over Dubuque, Anderson was a combined 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, including a 3-for-3 performance with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored in the nightcap. Huinker, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa/Decorah Huinker, a senior short stop, hit .615 (8-for-13) with three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and eight runs scored in four games during the week. In an 11-1, five-inning victory over UW-LaCrosse, Huinker was 3-for-3 with a double, home run, five RBI and two runs scored. She went 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored in the nightcap against LaCrosse, a 4-1 Luther win. In the Iowa Conference opener, Huinker went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 9-1, five-inning victory over Cornell. She finished her week with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in a 14-0, five-inning win. She became Luther’s career leader with 19 home runs, accomplishing the feat in just 54 career games. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week) |

Hoffman, Luther College, Centerville, Iowa/Centerville Hoffman, a junior third baseman, hit .647 (11-for-17) with two doubles, three home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored in six games during the week. She opened the week with a 3-for-3 performance against SUNY-Morrisville in which she had four RBI, two doubles and two runs scored in Luther’s 14-1 five-inning game. She was 1-for-3 in a 10-0 five-inning win over Kalamazoo and 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in a 19-4 five-inning win over Eastern Connecticut State. Hoffman was 1-for-2 with a run scored in a 13-6 win over North Central (Ill.) then finished her week with a pair of 2-for-3, one RBI, one run scored performances against Hastings (a 2-1 loss) and Calvin (a 5-4 win). Mar. 18 | Megan
Swingen, Central College, Woden, Iowa/Woden-Crystal Lake Swingen, a sophomore pitcher, went 3-0 during the week with one save, a 0.58 ERA and 15 strikeouts in five games (four starts). She allowed five runs (two earned) and 22 hits in 24.1 innings. She started, and won, games against Concordia, Wis. (9-0), Springfield (5-2) and Smith (8-0). Against Concordia, she pitched four innings of three-hit ball and struck out one. She pitched five innings, allowed two runs (both earned) and six hits while striking out four against Springfield. Swingen finished the week with a six-inning, three-hit, complete game against Smith, striking out five. She started and had a no-decision in Central’s 1-0, 8-inning loss to then #1-ranked Ithaca, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out four. In her lone relief appearance of the week, in a 6-4 win over Anderson, she pitched three innings, allowed three hits and struck out one to earn the save. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Week) |

Rogers, Wartburg College, Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert Rogers, a junior first baseman, hit .833 (5-for-6) with a home run, four RBI and four runs scored in two games. In Wartburg’s season opening win over St. Benedict (10-1 5-innings), she went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in one. In the second game of the day, an 8-3 win over Aquinas, she went 3-for-3 with a 3-run home run, a walk and two runs scored. Trailing 3-1 at the time, her home run sparked a five-run fourth-inning rally for the Knights. (IIAC Female Athlete of the Year) |
