Oct. 9
Molly Fiala, Coe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a freshman, went 8-0 during the week, including four victories at #1 singles and #1 doubles highlighted by two singles victories over two-time Conference MVP Marie Schutte of Cornell and Conference titles at #1 singles and #1 doubles. In the final regular season match of the year, Fiala defeated Schutte 7-5, 6-0, in singles and teamed with Rachel Lenoch to defeat Schutte/Pavla Brachova, 8-1, in doubles. At the IIAC Individual Tournament, Fiala defeated Buena Vista Yuvanca Russ (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinals and Central’s Kristin Kovar (6-1, 6-1) in the semifinals before defeating Schutte in the Championship match (6-4, 7-6 (7-2)). In the Tournament doubles, she and Lenoch defeated Russ/Shelli Smith (8-1), Kovar/Jennifer Knobbe (8-3) and in the Championship match, Schutte/Brachova (8-4).
Oct. 2
Marie Schutte, Cornell, Boone, Iowa/Boone
Schutte, a senior, went 4-2 during the week with a 2-1 record at #1 singles and #1 doubles. She defeated Wartburg’s Amanda Barkema and Luther’s Kirsten Madsen by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores. Her singles defeat was a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Wheaton (Ill.)’s Elizabeth Maclellan, the 11th-ranked player in the nation. The six games Schutte won were the most Maclellan has lost in a match this season. Schutte and doubles partner Pavla Brachova posted 8-4 wins over Wartburg and Luther, but suffered an 8-3 loss to Wheaton.
Sept. 25
Molly Fiala, Coe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a freshman, went 7-2 during the week and reached the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles at the ITA Regional where she lost to the eventual Champion in both brackets. In a dual meet against St. Ambrose, she posted a 6-0, 6-2 singles victory and teamed with Rachel Lenoch to post an 8-4 doubles victory. At the ITA Regional, Fiala defeated players from St. Benedict, Grinnell and Carleton before fall to Gustavus Adolphus’ Jamie Gaard (6-1, 6-4) in the quarters. In doubles play, Fiala/Lenoch defeated teams’ from Wheaton (Ill.) and Wisconsin-Whitewater before falling to Gustavus Adolphus’ Lauren Hom/Marla Menne (8-4) in the quarters. Sept. 18
Kristin Kovar, Central, Clarinda, Iowa/Clarinda
Kovar, a junior, went 5-1 during the week including a 3-0 record at #1 singles and a 2-1 record at #1 doubles. She recorded singles victories over Simpson’s Martha Davis (6-1, 6-2), St. Ambrose’s Anne Cox (6-3, 6-2) and Quincy’s Kerry Romani (6-2, 6-3). In doubles, with three different partners, she posted an 8-1 victory over Simpson, an 8-4 win over St. Ambrose and suffered an 8-5 loss to Quincy.
Sept. 11
Pavla Brachova, Cornell, Ames, Iowa/Ames
Brachova, a freshman, went 4-0 during the week with two victories at #2 singles and two victories at #1 doubles. In singles action, she posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Grinnell’s Camila Alarcon, the defending #2 singles Champion in the Midwest Conference, and a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Loras’ Jen Phelan. Brachova teamed with Marie Schutte to post an 8-1 victory over Grinnell and an 8-4 victory over Loras.
Sept. 4
Molly Fiala, Coe, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a freshman, went 4-0 during the week including two wins at #1 singles and two wins at #1 doubles with Rachel Lenoch. She did not lose a game in singles victories over Central’s Kristin Kovar and Simpson’s Carrie Brannen. In doubles, Fiala/Lenoch recorded an 8-5 win over Central and an 8-0 win over Simpson.
