2006 Players of the Week

Oct. 15
Kristin Kovar, Central College, Clarinda, Iowa/Clarinda
Kovar, a senior, became the first Central player to win the Iowa Conference #1 singles title and also placed second at #1 doubles at the IIAC Individual Tournament. The singles title is her second, having won #2 singles in 2004 and she also garnered her fourth All-Conference finish in singles and second in doubles. She defeated #7-seed Emily Heying of Wartburg (6-1, 6-1) and #6-seed Jen Phelan of Loras (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Kovar, the #2-seed, defeated top-seeded Pavla Brachova of Cornell in the Championship match (6-3, 3-6, 11-9). In doubles, #2-seeded Kovar and partner Jennifer Knobbe, defeated #7-seed Wartburg (8-0) and #3-seed Luther (8-5) before falling in the Championship match to top-seeded Brachova/Emily Loewen (8-4).

Cornell College #1 Doubles Team of Pavla Brachova (Ames, Iowa/Ames) & Emily Loewen (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free)
Brachova, a sophomore, and Loewen, a senior, went unbeaten in four matches against Conference opponents during the week and finished the season 6-0 against IIAC foes. They posted matching 8-4 victories over two of the Conference’s top teams, Coe (Molly Fiala/Hillary Allen) and Luther (Annalise Conaway/Taylor Cochrane), then added an 8-1 win over Wartburg (Amanda Barkema/Jodie Pearson) and an 8-2 win over Loras (Jen Phelan/Anita Saeger).
Oct. 1
Heidi Bothun, Luther College, LaCrosse, Wis./Logan
Bothun, a senior, went 4-0 during the week with a pair of wins at #2 singles and at #2 doubles. She posted singles victories over Simpson’s Martha Davis (6-1, 6-1) and Grinnell’s Rachel Engh (6-2, 6-1). Bothun teamed with Amy Christenson for doubles victories over Simpson (8-0) and Grinnell (8-5).
Sept. 24
Molly Fiala, Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson
Fiala, a sophomore, won the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament and advanced to the ITA Nationals in Fort Myers, Fla. in two weeks. Following a first round win by default, the Tournament’s #2-seed Fiala, defeated St. Olaf’s Kristina Poplavska (6-4, 6-2), Carthage’s Kristin Mikowski (6-2, 6-3) and Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Nicole Stamm (6-1, 6-0), in the first, second and quarterfinal rounds, respectively. In the semifinals, Fiala defeated #3-seeded Lauren Horn of Gustavus Adolphus (7-5, 6-4) and #4-seeded Amanda Sta Romano of Carthage (6-1, 7-6) in the Championship match. Fiala also posted a pair of victories in a dual win over Augustana (Ill.), winning at #1-singles (6-0, 6-0) and #1-doubles with Hillary Allen (8-3).

Sept. 17
Jessica Nims, Simpson College, Urbandale, Iowa/Urbandale
Nims, a sophomore, went 4-0 during the week including two wins at #3 singles and two wins at #2 doubles. In singles play, she defeated Central’s Katie Moklestad (6-7, 6-4, 11-9) and St. Ambrose’s Jenelle Bayer (6-4, 6-4). Nims teamed with Martha Davis to register an 8-6 win over Central and an 8-4 win over St. Ambrose.
Sept. 10
Emily Loewen, Cornell College, Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State
Loewen, a senior, posted a 5-0 record during the week including two victories at #2 singles and three victories at #1 doubles. In singles play, she posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Augustana (Ill.)’s Tricia Crawford and a 6-1, 6-1 win over Grinnell’s Rachel Engh. Loewen teamed with Pavla Brachova to post doubles victories over Augustana (8-4) and Grinnell (8-3), and teamed with Jessica Horn for a victory over Buena Vista (8-0).
Sept. 3
Pavla Brachova, Cornell College, Ames, Iowa/Ames
Brachova, a sophomore, posted a 4-0 record during the week with victories at #1 and #2 singles, and two at #1 doubles. In singles play, she posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Simpson’s Martha Davis at the #2 position, and a three-set win over Central’s Kristin Kovar at the #1 position (6-1, 4-6, 10-6). Brachova teamed with Emily Loewen to post an 8-2 win over Simpson’s #1 doubles team and an 8-3 win over Central’s #1 doubles team.
