To be eligible for IIAC All-Academic Team honors a student-athlete must compete at the varsity level, be at least a sophomore in academic standing and attain a 3.5 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
The Winter 2009-10 additions to the All-Academic Team include 33 sophomores, 28 seniors, and 26 juniors. Luther College added 17 student-athletes to the list followed by Coe College (13 student-athletes), Buena Vista University and Loras College (11 student-athletes), Wartburg College (10 student-athletes), Central College (8 student-athletes), Simpson College (7 student-athletes), the University of Dubuque (6 student-athletes), and Cornell College (4 student-athletes).
Fifty-eight of the student-athletes are basketball players, 33 women and 23 men. Fourteen of the honorees are swimmers or divers, 11 women and three men. Rounding out the Winter additions to the All-Academic Team are 15 wrestlers.
Heading into the spring sports season, only one two-sport athlete has been named to the All-Academic Team in 2009-10 – Central sophomore Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa). Paulson is a two-time Iowa Conference MVP in women’s golf and started five of seven games for the Dutch women’s basketball team before being sidelined with an injury.
