IOWA . . . Wartburg College raced to its 11th consecutive Iowa Conference women’s track and field crown while Central College won its second consecutive men’s league title and its 12th in the past 20 seasons at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium Saturday.
Wartburg, the defending NCAA Division III women’s outdoor champion and a likely contender for a repeat title May 27-29 in Berea, Ohio, rolled up 241 points. Simpson College, with its best finish in over a decade, was second with 125 points followed by Central with 109, Luther College with 103.5 and Loras College with 93.
The Knights snared eight individual titles for the second consecutive year. Faith Burt cruised to victories in the 100 and 200-meters while also anchoring the first-place 4x100-meter relay team. Skye Morrison swept the long jump and triple jump while Anna Kraayenbrink, swept the distance races for the second straight year and gave her a total of three victories in the 5,000.
Wartburg’s Marcus Newsom was the league’s coach of the year for the 11th time.
Burt and Morrison were named co-Most Valuable Performers. Burt was a part of two record-setting performance at the 2010 Championships. She reset her own Iowa Conference record in the 200 with a 24.49 clocking and then anchored the 4x100-meter relay to a record time of 46.79 seconds. Morrison swept the long jump and triple jump for the second straight year, leaping 18 feet, 11.25 inches in the long jump and 38-6.75 in the triple jump.
A total of five records were set in the women’s meet. In addition to Burt’s effort in the 200 and the Knights’ 4x100 relay, Wartburg also received record-setting performances from Anna Kraayenbrink in the 10,000 meters, and from its 4x400-meter relay. Kraayenbrink won the 10,000 in 36:36.22, bettering the 36:43.7 posted by Ericka Sell of Luther in 2004. The 4x400 relay team of Kendra Kregel, Brittany Melloy, Christine Marchik, and Jen Ganshirt crossed the line in 3:51.18, erasing the mark of 3:53.72 set in 2004 by the Wartburg team of Steph Arey, Amy Koester, Bridget Burns, and Holly Dorenkamp. Simpson’s Lauren Bucklin also set the record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.12, bettering the time established in 2004 by Dorenkamp.
Central racked up 210 points to win the men’s title with head coach Joe Dunham capturing league coach of the year honors for the second consecutive year. Wartburg took second with 120 points with Luther posting its best finish in a number of years with 108.5.
Central College teammates Ethan Miller and Kurtis Brondyke shared Most Valuable Performer honors. Miller won the long jump (23-7.5) and pole vault (14-11), finished third in the decathlon (5,911 points) and fourth in the triple jump (43-7). Brondyke won the javelin throw (190-11), took second in the decathlon (6,455 points) and triple jump (45-0.25), and fourth in the long jump (21-8.75). The pair also tied for third in the high jump (6-5).
Central won seven events in securing its 13th conference team title. In addition to the efforts of Ethan Miller and Brondyke, the Dutch received winning performances from Kyle Wood in the 400, Alex Miller in the 800, Matt Graber in the shot put, and Tyler Crouse in the discus throw.
There were no new league records in the men’s meet this year.
